Cycling Europe's river routes: flat, scenic and beginner-friendly

You don't need lycra or thighs of steel. Europe's river paths let anyone cycle between castles, vineyards and villages — mostly downhill-flat.

The secret of European cycle touring is that the famous routes follow rivers — which means they're nearly flat, impossible to get lost on, and dotted with towns every few kilometres.

Routes that welcome beginners

• The Danube path — Passau to Vienna is the classic first tour: gentle, serviced, spectacular.
• The Loire — châteaux and vineyards at pedalling pace.
• The Elbe — Dresden's baroque skyline to sandstone gorges.
